Upgrade Guide - When You Upgrade to TH9
As you get close to maxing out your TH8 defenses and troops, you are probably thinking of the day you hit the 'upgrade' button on that TH. One of the things you need to decide on is which upgrade strategy you want to follow once you get there. One way to do it is the so-called TH8,5. This means that for a while you will be concentrating on your offensive power: troops, heroes (mostly AQ, assuming you maxed out your BK to 10 while at TH8) and camp space. You will not, on the other hand, be placing ANY defenses with the exception of traps and walls, since you can use those to shift builders around and keep your gold low by upgrading the walls (this is to discourage raids on your base). This gives you a head start in war since you'll be able to attack bases stronger than your own, ideally leading to a strategic advantage for your clan (and more war fun for you). It is however not easy since you will get raided. A LOT. (I would recommend keeping your TH8 layout as long as you haven't placed most of the defenses). Plus, now you will mostly see TH9 and TH10s when raiding. So if you are not in a serious war clan this might not be the right thing for you.
I will assume 5 builders and that you are sitting on full loot storages as you become a TH9, if you are not, well...you should be. If you have 4 I would recommend skipping the CC in the first upgrade wave and doing it with the builder that becomes free after you have upgraded your Lab. Now, onto the upgrade order:
First wave: start your (1)Lab, (2)Dark Barrack to 5, (3)Spell Factory, (4)CC and (5)AQ (buy & upgrade to 2)
Second wave: (1) DE storage, (2) Dark Barrack to 6, (3)Dark Spell Factory, (4) Camp 1, (5) AQ to 3
Third wave: (1) Camps 2, 3 (4) Camp 4 (5)Aq to 4
Keep in mind: some builders will be done after 2 weeks, some after a few days. Aim to have builder (5) working on your AQ, she is a huge advantage in any attack including farming. I actually used her with barch or in Queen-Healer to get the DE for her next upgrade, she is a very self-sufficient lady. When you are done upgrading the structures mentioned above, don't forget the DE drills and Gold Storage!
You will need a lot of Elixir and DE for this and unless you are a crazy farmer you will probably have some idle time with your builders. During that time you can and should use them to place and upgrade walls (keeping your gold low makes you less attractive as a raid target, plus, assuming you had all skulls when you upgraded, you will have the new walls right up there in no time at all) and traps. You also want to place and upgrade your fourth Elixir Storage since you will need 6mil Elixir (TH8 max capacity) to research Loons. If you are serious (as in 3* serious) about war, you will want to research Hogs or Loons to max before anything else, start one of those as soon as your Lab is done upgrading. Both are good 3* strategies at TH9 level.
Once you are done with the third wave you can start placing your new defenses. I started with AD, Archer Tower and Wizard Tower. Keep upgrading your AD while placing the second Air Sweeper and the Tesla. Once you are done with those and you have an army able to take on a good TH9 (i.e. you have researched max Hogs or Loons and have unlocked the Lava Hound), go ahead and place your X-Bows.
Welcome to TH9! Now, let's have some fun!
